Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
