The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
