Minister States Ministry of Defence Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, because of the growing risks of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
